Session I: Addressing Food Waste

Compostable materials make up well over one-third of most jurisdictions’ waste streams. Further, Californians throw away nearly 6 million tons of food scraps each year. In support of California’s ambitious goal of 75 percent recycling, composting or source reduction of solid waste by 2020, and the related focus to move organics from landfills, build the state’s recycling and manufacturing infrastructure and create jobs, this Zone Works session concentrates on organics materials management programs, strategies, and technologies with emphasis on food waste.

Session II: Permitting Updates and Resources

In an effort to learn more about how our programs can individually and collectively facilitate the permitting of recycling manufacturers in the state, this session features the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). Attendees will learn about how Go-Biz provides comprehensive permit assistance and regulatory compliance statewide. We will hear more about this team’s process, including pre-application meetings between businesses and the appropriate regulatory agencies to help streamline the permitting process, as well as related resources and tools, including CalGOLD. We will also review and discuss how we interface with these services related to the RMDZ program and providing business assistance.

Moderator: Julie Trueblood, Supervising Integrated Waste Management Specialist I, CalRecycle
Paul Martin, Deputy Director, Permit Assistance, GO-Biz
Ken Decio, Senior Integrated Waste Management Specialist, CalRecycle

Session IV: Peer/Zone Share

What products are made in your Zone? The types of products found in the Zones include a range of materials and production approaches that include bulk, batch, and arts & crafts. They are co-manufactured as new products from the discards of the main companies. Or they are niche manufacturers. Some even produce common commodities. In this Peer Share, we will discuss the types of products that are manufactured and Zone Administrators will share descriptions of their Zone’s products and services, explaining what is being made, how it is being manufactured and materials used or reused.

Facilitator: Maureen Hart, North Coast RMDZ

The Facility Information Toolbox (FacIT) is a facility inventory of California’s solid waste handling, recycling, and market infrastructure, and a capacity projection model. FacIT includes primary processors (transfer stations, materials recovery facilities, compost facilities, etc.) and secondary processors (recycled feedstock producers, recycled product manufacturers, etc.), emerging technology facilities, disposal facilities, and some primary collection facilities. During this session, we will learn about the tool capabilities, benefits by user, and mapping features. The presentation will also cover how this tool relates to other RMDZ resources such as ZIRS and RecycleStore.
