February 2011: The Future is Back to the Basics
Welcome

Dear RMDZ Workshop Attendee: It is our pleasure to invite you to CalRecycle's Holiday Inn Sacramento “Zone Works” Training Workshop on February 2-3, 2011.

The theme of this “Zone Works” is The Future is Back to the Basics. The workshop will highlight a number of fundamentals to maximize our collective RMDZ activities. After lunch, CalRecycle staff will review the streamlined technical components and tools incorporated into the Zone Information Reporting System (ZIRS). This hands-on session is designed to provide all attendees the opportunity to fully experience the system's integrated planning, monitoring, reporting, and reimbursement request features. In follow-up, we will hear from our peers about innovative uses for this and other tools to target, reach, and effectively assist existing and potential RMDZ businesses. Building on this momentum, attendees will continue discussing and sharing techniques during the network reception the first evening.

We will also be featuring Jim Woods, City Manager of Littleton, Colorado and a principle pioneer of "economic gardening." In follow-up to a presentation at a 2001 Zone Works training workshop, Mr. Woods will reintroduce us to the concept of economic gardening and how it can be an effective approach in economic development during this especially difficult economic climate. CalRecycle staff will also review a past demonstration project to field test economic gardening principals with RMDZ businesses and the lessons learned. Participants will then brainstorm how we can continue to incorporate this philosophy into RMDZ services.

As you can see, this Zone Works promises to be another exceptional, engaging training experience! The draft agenda is now available for planning purposes and the final agenda will be provided prior to the workshop via e-mail as well as on the Zone Works registration web site.

Arrangements for registration, travel, and one night’s hotel can be made by CSUS using the online registration process, by phone, or by mail. The cost for each of these will be automatically paid via each ZA’s Zone Incentive Funds (ZIF). You will not have to get pre-approval or submit a reimbursement for airfare, lodging, or registration. However, other expenses like mileage or airport parking will require submitting a reimbursement form, which will be provided at the workshop. Please also be aware, if more than one night’s lodging is required, you will need pre-approval from Marshalle Graham prior to registering. Also, if you are a ZA and would like to use your ZIF monies to pay for a guest from your Zone to attend the workshop, prior approval must be obtained from Marshalle Graham. More instructions are forthcoming.

We look forward to a successful event and hope to see you in Sacramento on February 2– 3, 2011. If you have any questions about Zone Works, please contact Marshalle Graham atmarshalle.graham@calrecycle.ca.gov or 916-341-6270.
