June 2017
Welcome

Dear Recycling Market Development Zone (RMDZ) Workshop Attendee: We are pleased to invite you to CalRecycle's Zone Works Training Workshop on June 21-22, 2017 at the Holiday Inn in Sacramento. Zone Works offers the unique opportunity for Zone Administrators, CalRecycle Zone Liaisons and Loan staff, and valued program partners to regularly convene and discuss current issues and to coordinate business assistance activities. Through the educational and networking sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about new and expanding funding opportunities and other business incentives to support recycling manufacturers and reuse/recovery networks.

Pre-Workshop Opportunities

  • The morning of June 21st, Zone Administrators are encouraged to attend the California Association of Recycling Market Development Zones (CARMDZ) meeting.

  • Additionally, for new Zone Administrators, CalRecycle and CARMDZ will host a RMDZ 101 training to review roles and share resources.

Workshop Summary

Following the CARMDZ meeting, RMDZ 101 Training and lunch on June 21st, the first session of the training workshop explores manufacturing with post-consumer materials in California in the context of the RMDZ program. The following session features an overview of tire markets and trends, a broad discussion of tire recovery with specifics for ZAs, incentives for cities and counties to use Rubberized Asphalt Concrete, developments for Caltrans specifications, and the latest tire studies, e.g. the impact of playgrounds.

During the third session on Day One, we will have the ever-popular Peer Share session lead by Maureen Hart. In addition to sharing local program information and how zones are spending their Zone Incentive Funds, we will spend time flash-dating, where individual ZAs will meet one-on-one to brainstorm, share challenges, and share successes, all in a few minutes!

We will conclude the first day with a networking reception during which attendees have the opportunity to discuss the material shared throughout the day and have additional access to workshop presenters.

On Day Two, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) will share with you how they market California to other states, what companies they have attracted to zones, what attracted those companies, and tools you can use, like the California Business Mapping Tool.

During our last session of the workshops, we will hear from garment manufacturers using postconsumer fiber to make clothing or other textiles in California.

We are excited about the diverse array of excellent speakers and hope you will join us in Sacramento on June 21-22, 2017. In the meantime, if you have any questions about Zone Works, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Frank Severson, Zone Works Coordinator
